Head lice are at epidemic levels amoung elementary school children nation-wide. It is a nuisance that can affect anyone regardless of socioeconomic class, health habits, or cleanliness. Lice are small (sesame-seed-sized) gray or brownish insects. They only live in human hair and feed off blood from the scalp. Their eggs, called nits, are attached to the hair shafts with a glue-like substance and cannot be shaken off. They do not jump or fly but only crawl from head to head or between objects to spread. Persistent itching of the scalp is the only major symptom of infection.
To “head off” this problem, El Carmelo has established a Lice Prevention Program. Our program includes:
- Regular monthly head checks in all classes beginning the first week of school, (more frequent checks may take place in the event of an outbreak).
- Exposure notification to alert parents about the possibility of infection.
- Classroom teaching about lice and their prevention.
- Carmeletter - (the school newsletter) articles / updates to assist in family education
- Lice education and treatment handouts and articles available in each classroom.
Children found to have lice / nits will be sent home to be treated and to have all nits removed in accordance with the PAUSD “No Nit” policy. Upon returning to school, the children must be rechecked at the health office before they will be allowed to return to their classrooms.
For more lice information including treatment please refer to the Pediculosis Society Webpage.

Review these tips with your children:
- Bicycle helmets are required by law for all children under 18. Helmets should fit snugly, and rest level on the head, and low on the forehead, just above the eyebrows. Tighten helmet straps, adjusting the 'Y' to beneath the ear, and
- the chin strap so that two fingers slip in comfortably.
- Bicyclists should cycle on the right side of the road.
- Review hand signals.
- Check tire pressure and brake pads.
- Be a good role model. Parents should wear helmets too!
