The English Language Learner Program (E.L.L.) is the new name for the former E.S.L. or E.L.D. programs. Nothing has changed except the name.
The ELL program at El Carmelo is a pull out
program that helps children learn English in a small group setting.
I work with children 2-3 times a week for 1/2 hour
at a time. Currently I teach 45 children from the following countries:
Mexico,
China,
France,
Japan,
Korea,
Germany,
Israel,
Russia,
Brazil,
Sweden
India, and Malaysia
I help the children learn to speak, read, and write English through games, songs, plays, worksheets, grammar exercises, writing assignments and various hands-on activities. To learn a language, it is important to feel relaxed. Because the children feel comfortable in my class, they are willing to take the risks necessary to speak a new language.
To help the children who are brand new to English, we have wonderful primary language tutors who assist the children in their home language. The primary language tutors give the children access to the core curriculum by explaining the class assignments and helping them understand what is happening in their classroom.
There are two ways to help your child learn English. First, be available to them while they are doing their homework. If your child is having difficulty with homework assignments, be sure to talk with his teacher or me. Secondly, allow your child to invite an English speaking friend to your house or apartment on Saturday or after school. Once a friend has been invited to your house, your child will probably be invited back to that child's house and from then on, English learning is easy.
