My life began in California as did three generations before me. Both my parents were teachers who gave me the qualities that so embody the teaching profession, caring about children, wanting to make a difference in each of their lives, and a deep desire to guide them successfully through the learning process. It was a part of their lives that has become a part of my life.
My sister and I were blessed with a rich and full life as we were
growing to adulthood. My father, who worked at the college as
a counselor for foreign students from all around the world, brought
them into our home year after year. He wanted them to feel that
they had a family here in America as they struggled to become
a part of a new and very different life. Students were invited
to every holiday and became a central part of our family life.
Because both my parents were teachers, we had the summer to travel all over the world visiting many of the former students who had been a part of our family life. Those trips gave both my sister and I a broader view of the world around us and have affected both of our adult lives. I appreciate diversity, differences, cultures, and individuals in a way that I could never have without the wonderful opportunities provided by my parents.
Music has been a central part of my life. Wherever we were (at
home around the piano, in the car, on trips, with friends) we
sang. I have brought that music into my classroom not only to
share it with the children, but because it brings with it a joy
and unity that the children and I enjoy together.
Since I went to graduate school at Stanford, I have lived most
of my adult life in Palo Alto. I taught in Palo Alto, met my husband
here, and raised my two children here. I took time off from teaching
to raise Peter and Aimee and then returned to teaching. Peter
is now 28, teaching Science Lab in 4th and 5th Grade . Aimee graduated
from UCSC majoring in literature. She has spent 9 months traveling
in Europe and currently working for the City of Palo Alto Recreation
Department.
I have now been at El Carmelo for sixteen years and have taught
both first and second grade. It has been a rewarding experience
to work with children. Each year is new and I look forward to
each new class with fresh enthusiasm. The children are our future
and I feel privileged to be a part of their lives.
